Burke Brown

Burke Brown‘s recent New York theater designs include Wickets at 3LD Art & Technology Center (which was featured in American Theatre Magazine in April 2009), Tarell Alvin McCraney’s The Brothers Size at the NYSF- Public Theater, and Drama of Works’ Puppet Kafka at the Here Arts Center. Mr. Brown has worked with directors David Gordon, Mark Lamos, Evan Yionoulis, Tea Alagic, David Hammond, William Carden, Sam Gold, Henry Wishcamper, Clove Galilee, Nelson Eusebio, Erik Pearson, Anna Jones, Evan Cabnet, Sturgis Warner, Yana Ross, Jessi Hill, Mike Donahue, Becca Wolff, Ethan Heard, Patricia McGregor, May Adrales, and Shana Cooper. Mr. Brown has worked at the Ensemble Studio Theatre, NYSF/ Public Theater, Here Arts Center, Julliard, La MaMa ETC, 3LD Arts and Technology Center, Skirball Center, Miscreant Theatre, Harman Hall, The Studio Theatre, Soho Think Tank, and Yale Repertory Theatre.
Exciting international designs include Seven produced by Vital Voices Global Partnership in London, Elfriede Jelink’s Sleeping Beauty at the Seoul Performing Arts Festival in South Korea, and The Brothers Size at the Abbey Theater’s Peacock Theatre in Dublin, Ireland.
Mr. Brown received special notice in Opera America’s 2008 Director-Designer Showcase. Recent Opera Designs include David Greers’ Calling: An Opera of Forgiveness, Humperdinck’s Hansel und Gretel, Mozart’s Le nozze di Figaro, and Monteverdi’s L’Orfeo.
Recent music designs include Dana Leong’s Life After Dark at the Apollo Theater, So Percussion and the Casals Quartet at the Baryshnikov Arts Center, The Randy Bandits at Ars Nova, and the CD release party of Greta Gertler’s “Edible Restaurant” at Joe’s Pub.
Recent dance designs include Aszure Barton's international tour of Blue Soup and A Traveling Show at the Baryshnikov Arts Center, John Selya’s La Voix at Joyce Soho, and the Ballet Pro Musica Festival in Albuquerque, New Mexico.
As a projection designer, Mr. Brown recently designed One of the Damned Few for the World Performance Project and Cavalli’s Giasone for Yale Baroque Opera Project.
Recent exciting collaborations include assisting Jennifer Tipton on David Gordon’s Uncivil Wars: Collaborating with Brecht & Eilser at the Kitchen, NYC and on Verdi’s Il Travotore at the Metropolitan Opera. Mr. Brown also worked with Christine Sciulli on the Mabou Mines production Song for New York: What Women Do While Men Sit Knitting.
Mr. Brown has directed Sarah Kane’s Crave, and Tarell Alvin McCraney’s Run, Mourner, Run (co-Director) for the Yale Cabaret.
Burke Brown was the Resident Lighting Artist for Bone Orchard and the 2008 Artist in Residence for Lighting Design for Ars Nova. Mr. Brown volunteers with the 52nd Street Project several times a year.
Mr. Brown has a BA in International Studies and Theater Studies from Guilford College in Greensboro, NC. He received his MFA from the Yale School of Drama.
Originally from North Carolina, Burke Brown has lived in Beijing, Miami, and New Haven, and now lives in Brooklyn, NY.
