Position: Tour Audio Engineer for Jackie, Vi, and Lena National Tour
Company: The Jena Company
Dates: 01.10.07 - 04.07
Post Date: 12.03.06
This is a mid-market National consisting of one-offs and splits
touring to roadhouses, Performing Arts Centers, college theatres,
etc...
We travel in a rock n' roll style tour bus (12 bunk sleeper) with a
company of nine (Cast of 4, Company Manager, Production Manager (me),
my assistant, Audio Engineer, and Driver.) We carry basic audio gear- (wireless mics, console, playback on MD,
maybe some monitors and compression units or whatever the engineer
sees fit) but primarily rely on the house PA.
Pay is $1,150.00 per week, broken down as $800 taxable salary, and
$350.00 untaxed 'per diem'. The company lumps 'per diem' in with
salary because:
1) hotels are covered in full by the company (everyone gets their own room) and
2) all meals are catered at the theatres. (real, hot, edible food...
no deli platter B.S.)
This is a small-ish tour, but the company (Jena Co.) is great. We're
hooked up with a pretty swank bus with X Box and DVD players in each
bunk (I dunno... guys always seem happy about that part), we stay in
nice hotels, get fed well, and dates are booked with our sanity and
rest as a priority... (ie- early morning rolls and overnite drives are
minimal)
The Jena Company is also loyal... and will keep you working over the
years (that is, if you want to continue touring.)
Obviously, I need a solid engineer that can mix a live show but it's
particularly important that I have someone who is clever and creative,
adaptable, and can adjust to a variety of situations and houses.
Sometimes we'll be in gorgeous theatres with state-of-the-art
equipment, other times we'll be, well...not so lucky. Second, I need a real team player. (did I just actually type 'team player'?)
The audio engineer's primary responsibility (in case the context clues
aren't there) is audio.
However, I need someone who is willing to jump in and help in other
capacities when needed. This may mean helping get the set up, running
out to get a can of paint, focusing some lights... whatever.
Basically I need a pro-active personality that can look around and
think "the crew really isn't very helpful today" or "looks like cables
need to be dressed" or "Lauren needs coffee bad" or whatever and can
then turn around and make that happen.
More than anyone else, audio is truly my right-hand-man (or woman)...
even more so than my assistant in many ways. We work side by side
from load-in thru load-out, so it's vital that person is energetic,
positive, and just plain awesome.
Tour experience is great but certainly not compulsory.
Live mixing in some capacity is important.
Personality is key.
I am interviewing now, and hope to fill the position by mid-December.
