Director Matthew Arbour has orchestrated the 90-minute show with loving care. He also found a sterling cast to play all five musicians. Many theatergoers will wonder if the actors are actually playing their instruments. (No, they’re not — but that the question must be asked shows how convincing all five are in using their bows.)
On Lee Savage’s handsome wood set that replicates the stage of a concert hall, we first come to know Elliot, the imperious first violinist. Saxon Palmer shows a man who, if he isn’t full of himself, is very close to the brim. Although one of the rules of the quartet is that each member has an equal vote, Elliot seems to take the lead — and manipulates the others. Read more »
